    Celebrated musician Ryuichi Sakamoto died Tuesday at the age of 71, recording firm Avex announced Sunday. Born in 1952, Sakamoto gained prominence in Japan in the late 1970s after forming the techno-pop band Yellow Magic Orchestra with Yukihiro Takahashi and Haruomi Hosono. His fame spread outside Japan in the 1980s after acting and scoring for films including ‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence’ and ‘The Last Emperor.’ In December last year, he released a solo piano livestream performance, which became his final concert following his second cancer diagnosis in 2021
