World Press Photo Foundation Announces 2021 Nominees, Caixin Video Nominated for Two Awards

The nominees for the 64th World Press Photo Digital Storytelling Contest and Photo Contest were announced on March 10. “Good Morning, My Wife in Heaven,” a video made by Caixin reporters Yingfei Liang and Shumin Wei, is nominated in the Short and Online Video of the Year in Digital Storytelling Contest.

“Good Morning, My Wife in Heaven” tells a heartbreaking story happened when the coronavirus swept Wuhan. Lao Hei, a Wuhan local, keeps writing to his wife Shunzhi Deng every day after she died from Covid 19. He wrote nearly 200 letters in two months, sharing simple stories of his daily life. He used plain words to express his incredible love and endless grief for his late wife. Through the true story, the video recorded the difficult moments that people in Wuhan experienced together, and how they moved on with pain buried deep in their hearts.

The World Press Photo Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Founded in 1955, the foundation is known for its annual press photography competition held since 1957. For six decades, the competition has been the world's most influential in visual journalism. Many Chinese media have been nominated for WPP awards since 1988, including the Xinhua news agency, China News Service and China Daily.

The Digital Storytelling Contest, launched in 2011, is open to short documentary film and interactive productions. It recognizes and rewards forms of visual storytelling enabled by digital technologies. The Digital Storytelling Contest awards visual stories in three categories: Interactive, Long, and Short. In 2019, WPP added two more categories, Interactive of the Year and Online Video of the Year, to recognize and celebrate the best visual journalism utilizing digital technology.

This is the second time that Caixin Visual Team has been nominated by the WPP. In 2011, Caixin photojournalist Guang Niu won the 2011 Photo Contest, General News, Singles, 2nd prize. Apart from that, at the 32nd China Economic Journalism Awards in 2020, Caixin's visual production “Ten-Year Fishing Ban on the Yangtze River” won the 2nd prize for Convergent News, and “Sidewalk Sales Return to Chinese Cities” won the 3rd prize for Short Video Live News.

Since Caixin Visual Team was established in 2015, they have been committed to the visualization of serious news, and have been working closely with reporters and editors to produce text, audio, pictures, graphics, documentaries and data news. They produced “Escaping the Flood” and “The Last Piece of Field of Sanjiaoxiang,” with a focus on floods in southern China. They produced “Nine Years Living With Brucellosis,” telling the whole story of the brucellosis outbreak in Lanzhou. They also produced “The Quarantine Diaries of Five Ordinary People,” recording the lives of various individuals during the pandemic. They tell stories with digital media, delivering information while capturing touching moments.

Caixin Visual is a column developed by Caixin Visual Team. With nearly 300 productions, it has recorded China’s ups and downs over the past five years, and has become a significant outlet for news documentaries. The nomination is also a recognition of Caixin's persistent exploration of integrated media over the years.

According to Jingchun Wang, jury member of the 1st Digital Storytelling Contest, “Good Morning, My Wife in Heaven” presents all the elements of news media. Still images, dynamic videos, simultaneous sound and the whole pace are all handled very well. Most importantly, it didn’t involve too much artifice, simply recording everything just the way it was.

Winners will be announced at the Awards Show (Online) on April 15.
